Mentaiko Pasta

Once upon a time, somewhere I can't remember, I tried Mentaiko Pasta for the first time. It's a classic Japanese take on Italian food. Mentaiko meaning Spicy Cod Roe (they are actually raw fish eggs). At first I thought it sounded gross but I was a sucker for anything in a cream sauce so I had to try it, after trying... I WAS IN LOVE!!!!!

As I had Mentaiko Pasta craving that night, I decided learn to cook some myself. I managed to get mentaiko at Meidi-ya at Liang courts so that I can cook it at home myself. This dish would probably cost about S$15.00 and above outside but I got the mentaiko at Meidi-ya for S$10.80. There are 2 mentaiko sacs in the box so I can have this twice. Also I bought japanese mayonnaise. After trying all the brands, I find that the Kewpie brand is the best. It can also be used to make California sushi as well as go with other japanese dishes. You can use regular mayonnaise if you want to but I think it is best when cooking to find more authentic ingredients. So jap ingredients for jap food and so on and so forth. In all this dish probably cost me maybe S$8 -S$9 and it was so easy to make!! Only took me about 20 mins to cook.








This is my version of called the Lazy Agak Agak Anything Goes Mentaiko Pasta (I threw in some bacon too).

Mentaiko Pasta

Ingredients
Pasta of your choice
Cream
Kewpie Mayonnaise 17.64 Oz.
Mentaiko
Parmesan Cheese (optional)
Salt and Pepper to taste

  1. Cook pasta till al dente preferably in water flavoured with sea salt since the ingredients is seafood too.
  2. Drain the pasta and pour in some cream or milk and cook it a bit until it thickens slightly.
  3. Add in some salt or pepper to taste.
  4. Pour the pasta on a plate, squeeze in mayonnaise to taste.
  5. Cut the Mentaiko sac and scrape the roe onto the pasta.
  6. Add Cheese if using.
  7. Mix and enjoy...
